YOUTH PROGRAMS

TOP SECRET SCIENCE & MATH SUMMER FUN            (Michael Bergen – Massachusetts Science Center)
Entering Grades 1 – 5                                                   Classes will be held in the West Int. School Cafeteria
Choice of:
        Half Day: $95, Monday - Friday, June 18 – 22, 9 a.m. – 12 noon  June half day session is full -
                                                                                                                  call for wait list.
        Full Day: $165, Monday - Friday, August 6 – 10, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.  Full day students should bring their lunch!
The kids can have a blast (literally!) while they learn. This program follows state guidelines for required curriculums.
Children will complete many experiments each day under the instruction of an experienced and professional science teacher.

*TINY TOTS (Ages 4 & 5) & KIDS CLUB (Ages 7 & 8 – Session 1 only)                       (Boutwell School)
$145 per session.
Two Sessions:  Monday, June 25 – Friday, July 13 (no 7/4), or Monday, July 16 – Thursday, August 2,
9 a.m. – 12 noon.
This social/recreational program includes arts and crafts, games, special events, daily themes and a field trip.
Participants receive a t-shirt and a class photo.  A copy of your child’s birth certificate is needed for registration.
Volunteer applications, for students entering grade 9 and above, will be accepted during the month of May.
6 year old classes for Sessions 1 and 2 are full - call for wait list.

COOKING MAGIC – FOR KIDS YOUNG AND OLD                                  (Buzzell Senior Center)
Ages 8 and up, $15, Tuesday, July 10, 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.  The Recreation Department is teaming up
with the Senior Center to offer an intergenerational cooking class.  Together, seniors and students will learn to
make sweet and savory crepes and a local mixed greens salad.  They will then enjoy the fruits of their labors
over a shared lunch.

LEGO ROBOTICS                                   (Wicked Cool for Kids – Town Hall Auditorium)
Grades 2 – 5, $80, 5 Weeks, Wednesdays, September 26 – October 24, 4 – 5 p.m.
Love Legos?  Come join us in Lego Robotics to create robots with motors and sensors and program them
on computers.  Budding techies will be faced with lots of challenges.  Participants will also learn problem
solving and teamwork – all by playing and building with Legos!  

CHEFS IN TRAINING!  - SUMMER SIZZLE!            (Lori Deliso, Kids Cooking Green – WHS)
Entering Grades 3 – 6, $240, Monday – Friday, June 18 – 22, 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m.  All food creations feature
local ingredients. Celebrate summer by learning to cook foods native to New England – cod cakes, tomato
mozzarella sliders, strawberry rhubarb sauce, blueberry cobbler, fresh fruit sorbets and more!  Learn cooking
techniques including those all-important knife skills.  There will be an “in-house” field trip – a visit by a farmer
or food artisan.  Each class will highlight a different recipe while you cook a healthy, hearty main course, dessert
and beverage to enjoy at the end of each class.  Go home with recipes, a full belly and new knowledge of local
ingredients and nutrition facts. Limited openings left!

KIDS POTTERY PLUS!                                      (Tricia Langeleh, Magic Brush Pottery – Shawsheen Cafeteria)
Entering Grades 2 – 8, $55, 5 Weeks, Mondays, July 2 – 30, 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.
This class will offer three weeks of pottery, one week of painting on canvas and a week of tie dying.  All pottery
pieces will be functional, food safe and make a lovely hand-crafted gift or collectible.  Paints are non-toxic and washable.
Samples will be on display on the Recreation Office.  Playground Program participants can supplement their day
with this fun program!

TEDDY BEAR PICNIC – FOR CUBS YOUNG AND OLD!                     (Buzzell Senior Center)
Ages 3 & 4 accompanied by parent, $5 per person,
Thursday, September 13, 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
The Recreation Department is teaming up with the Senior Center to offer a Teddy Bear Picnic for young
children, their parents and seniors to enjoy together. The party will include games, activities, music and lunch.
Bring your favorite teddy bear!

LITTLE DRAGONS KARATE CLASS                     (Academy of Traditional Karate, 155 West St.)
Ages 3 & 4, $25, 4 Weeks, Tuesdays, July 31 – August 21, 5 – 5:30 p.m.
Classes include basic Karate moves, Japanese culture and life skills. T-shirt and belt included.
       
AT HOME ALONE                                   (Gunther Wellenstein, S.A.F.E. – Town Hall Auditorium)
Entering Grades 4 - 6, $18, Wednesday, August 22, 4 – 6 p.m.
How do you handle knocks and rings?  Who do you call in an emergency?  Prepare your child to stay at home alone.
       

SUMMER SPORTS


SUMMER BASKETBALL                                               (Shawsheen School Outdoor Courts)
Forms for these programs are available at the Recreation Office and on our website.  
Registration deadline is June 7.

        *SHOOTING STARS - Entering Grades 3 – 5, $25, 6 Weeks,
                Tuesdays (Girls) or Thursdays (Boys), July 10 – August 16.
        This program will provide instruction and games once a week.
        Teams will play a staggered game schedule at 6, 7 or 8 p.m.

        *TWILIGHT HOOPS – Entering Grades 6 – 8, $15 ($35 w/ mesh reversible Recreation jersey), 4 Weeks,
                Mondays and Wednesdays, July 9 – August 1, 6 – 8 p.m.  
        This co-ed program allows participants to drop in for as much or as little pick-up basketball as they want!  
        Games will be organized by a supervisor, and refereed.  Pre-registration is required.  
        Players new to Recreation Basketball will need to purchase a navy/white reversible jersey.

*SUMMER TENNIS LESSONS                                          (Allison Bleier - Boutwell Courts)
$25 for each Monday – Friday session, rain or shine!  
Bring an unopened can of tennis balls on the first day of the session.

TENNIS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS CHILDREN                               (Kathleen Reynolds - Boutwell Courts)
Ages 5 and up, $20, 6 Weeks, Sundays, July 8 – August 12, 4 – 5 p.m.  Rain dates:  Sundays, August 19 and 26.
This new program will allow participants to move through various stations to practice eye/hand coordination,
footwork drills and rallying.  Participants will be divided by ability level.  All equipment will be provided.

GOLF CLINICS                                                            (Barrie Bruce – Billerica Country Club)
Ages 7 – 14, $95, Monday – Friday.  “All you need is a pair of sneakers and a good attitude!”
 Equipment provided. Classes accept both beginners and continuing students.  Choose the clinic that’s right for you!

Forms are available in the Recreation Office and on our website. Documentation of a physical within
the past two years and immunization records must be provided with the registration forms.

                The mini version of Sports Jam!  Play soccer, t-ball, kick ball, basketball, softee hockey, and balloon ball.  
                Play “finding the Nemo”, Sponge Bob tag, thunder relays, Kiddie Cat Olympics and more.  
                Theme days include Red Sox Day and Friday Fun!

                Sports Jam (Ages 7 – 9)         Monday – Friday, August 6 – 10          Woburn St. School

                The ultimate multi-sport program with core sports of baseball, basketball and soccer.  Other sports like
                flag football, volleyball, ultimate Frisbee, dodgeball, disc golf, team handball and kick ball are included –
                as well as games like “shark attack” and “safari”.


        CHALLENGER BRITISH SPORTS CAMP          Monday – Friday, July 16 – 20           Woburn St. School
                        $125 Half Day (Ages 5 - 12) 8:30 – 11:30 a.m. or
                        $160 Full Day (Ages 7 - 12) 8:30 a.m. – 3 p.m.
                This new sports camp introduces tag rugby, cricket, rounders and net ball as well as soccer and kick ball!
                Enjoy the sports of kids “across the pond”!  Play hard, have fun and make new friends!  Register at the
                Recreation Office or online at:  www.challengersports.com.  Register online by June 1 and receive a free
                British soccer jersey ($6.95 shipping fee).

CO-ED BEACH VOLLEYBALL                                          (Amanda Lee Hollenbeck – Town Beach)
Entering Grades 6 – 8, $25, 6 Weeks, Wednesdays, July 11 – August 22, no 7/25, 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.
This program for beginner or experienced players consists of 15 minutes of instruction followed by 45 minutes of team play.
