Town Manager Appoints Joseph McMahon as Fire Chief

After completion of a civil service assessment center and interviews with the top three candidates for the position of Fire Chief, I am pleased to announce my appointment of Joseph T. McMahon to the position of Fire Chief.

Mr. McMahon was hired by the Town in 1982 as a fire fighter and has served in many important roles since that time.  In 1987 he was appointed as a lieutenant serving in fire prevention.  His responsibilities included both working with local businesses and involvement with the School Department to educate students about fire safety.  In 1996 Mr. McMahon was appointed to serve as a shift lieutenant directing fire personnel to medical and fire emergencies in addition to conducting training and directing the inspection and testing of vehicles and equipment.

Mr. McMahon obtained an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from North Shore Community College, maintains his Emergency Medical Technician certification and has completed a number of classes in topics including Incident Command System, Emergency Driver Training, Hazardous Materials First Responder and Fire/Arson Detection.  He is intimately familiar with the operations of the Wilmington Fire Department and I am fully confident that he will provide strong leadership in the department and serve as a resource to fellow department heads and the community at large.

His appointment becomes effective at 12:01 a.m. on Monday, February 19, 2018.
