Public Buildings' Covid-19 response and continued service

In response to COVID-19 all Wilmington schools and Public buildings are closed to the public with the exception of the Public Safety Building (Police and Fire) until further notice. The Department of Public Buildings and its employees continue their work in our buildings during this shutdown.

During this event, staff hours of operation are similar to our vacation schedule which allows us to deep clean and disinfect building as needed. When originally notified on March 11th that the schools would be closed March 12th and the 13th, the Public building staff was mobilized as a unit to deep clean and disinfect the entire High School and the West Int. School. Once completed, they moved on to other town buildings cleaning over 750,000 square feet.

The Public Buildings Dept. continues to operate while doing so in a safe manner. Listed below are a few examples of items that continue to be performed:

  • Public Building staff continues to maintain and monitor all building operating systems, air handlers and fuel consumption in all buildings and administrative work to keep the department functioning.
  • Make deliveries of supplies to school and town buildings, to deliver food goods to support the school food services meals program which is functioning to serve the community needs during this time.
  • Clean and disinfect school buildings after the meals program, school staff and administration have entered the buildings as needed.
  • Continue to clean and disinfect town buildings during continued operations, the Public Safety building, veterans and Town Hall.
  • Continue Building checks of all buildings.
  • Perform State inspections as required for all buildings.
  • Bring maintenance staff in as needed for Traffic light, building maintenance, plumbing and electrical repairs.
