Emergency Medical Services

The Wilmington Fire Department provides emergency medical services to the residents of and those working in town, not to mention the commuters who pass through the town via roads or rail.

Firefighters are trained as Emergency Medical Technicians and are assigned to operate and render Basic Life Support. Together with responding Advanced Life Support technicians, they provide the highest level of emergency medical care.

The Wilmington Fire Department currently has two ambulances available to respond 24/7.

The department provides emergency medical services for both BLS and ALS emergencies. Each firefighter is licensed by the states OEMS office to provide basic emergency medical services. They are responsible for maintaining that license by re-certifying every two years. The Fire Departments' training office provides classes for continuing education in cooperation with OEMS.

As each medical call is received Emergency Medical Dispatchers determine whether a BLS or ALS response is appropriate. A BLS response will receive an ambulance with two firefighters/emts and an engine to expedite care and transport. An ALS response with receive two firefighters/emts, a paramedic unit and an engine.

Firefighter/EMT's transport patients to a variety of Emergency Care Facilities while administering appropriate care along the way.
