Marriage Licenses

TO APPLY FOR AN INTENTION TO MARRY

The Office of the Town Clerk takes in Intentions by appointment only

Massachusetts marriage intentions need to be filled out by both parties in front of the Town Clerk's Staff.  The forms are not available online.  The paperwork usually takes 20 to 30 minutes to complete.  The cost of the marriage license is $25.00.

In Massachusetts, you cannot pick up your marriage license for three days after you fill out your intentions, including the day that you filled them out. So if you fill out your intentions on a Monday, you can pick up your marriage certificate no earlier than Thursday.  If you are getting married on Saturday or Sunday, you must fill out your intentions no later than the preceding Tuesday and pick up your marriage license by that Friday.  The marriage license is good for 60 days from the date you filled out your intentions.   

If you cannot wait the full 3-day waiting period, you can request a waiver from Middlesex Probate and Family Court South. We strongly recommend contacting them to verify the process and cost.  If one of the parties is a member of the armed forces and cannot fill out the paperwork in person, call us to discuss your options.

You must be at least 18 years old to fill out marriage intentions in Massachusetts.  We require you to prove your age when you come in to fill out the paperwork.

If you are having a friend or family member act as the officiant they need a One Day Solmnizer Certificate.  A certificate from the Governor's office needs to be in place at the time of the marriage.  The process takes 4-6 weeks. The cost is $25.00.  You may obtain the application online at the Secretary of the Commonwealth's website.

Once the marriage certificate is returned to us after the ceremony, the Town Clerk's Office will send you a certified copy.
